Veja X Sea Shepherd collaboration ultimately opens the chance for other fashion brands to consider teaming up with NGOs for more meaningful products.
Veja recently announced its latest collaboration with non-profit marine conservation organization Sea Shepherd. This time around, they came up with an all-black sneakers with a stealthy vibe and ultimately a play on Veja’s latest Dekkan collection.
The Dekkan sneaker collaboration comes in an all-black colorway. Moreover, they added the Sea Shepherd logo at the heel. Likewise, the upper is crafted with Alveomesh, a technique to create fabric from 100% recycled polyester. Then, the midsole is 70% sugarcane.
All profits from the shoe will be donated to Sea Shepherd although they are not advertising that heavily. “We didn’t make a fuss about it. It’s better to say Veja is supporting Sea Shepherd financially,” says Veja co-founder Sébastien Kopp.
In fact, before this collaboration, Veja’s sustainability efforts were usually more of an internal matter such as ensuring its green supply chain. As Kopp said himself, “Usually we don’t do partnerships with NGOs because we feel sometimes maybe it’s too commercial, too unlinked,”
However, and to everyone’s surprise, Sea Shepherd was the one who initiated the collaboration. Sea Shepherd approached Veja with the concept, citing that they resonated with Veja’s taking action towards a solution.
As an NGO, Sea Shepherd is famous for its direct-action to help protect whales, dolphins and marine wildlife. On top of that, they have their own fleet of ships on the front lines. Together with authorities, they combat illegal fishing and bring poachers to justice. Their main goal is to fight against those who think they can pillage and pollute the ocean with impunity.
The Veja x Sea Shepherd collaboration is available to buy now from the Veja webstore for $180 USD), click here to purchase.
