Rihanna’s Maternity Fashion: Breaking the Bias

Rihanna’s Maternity Fashion: Breaking the Bias

Ever since she announced her pregnancy, we can already tell that Rihanna’s Maternity Fashion is going to pave the way for and become the trendsetter of a more pregnancy-friendly style.

When Rihanna and A$AP Rocky revealed that they are expecting their first child, the world stopped because we knew what’s coming. Riri’s maternity fashion coming soon! And now, lo and behold, we have been blessed with a series of industry-breaking maternity styles by our badgalriri.

When asked about her maternity fashion philosophy with Entertainment Tonight at an event, saying, “It’s a long 9 to 10 months. You have to enjoy it.”

“I’m trying to enjoy it as much as I could. And fashion is one of my favorite things so, you know, we’re defying what it even means to be pregnant and maternal,” she added (with a laugh, according to the ET report). “It can get uncomfortable at times and so you can dress the part and pretend.”

Rihanna also talked about pregnancy more generally, describing it as “an exciting journey so far.”

“I’m just taking it as it comes every week,” she explained. “There’s always something new and I’m just taking it and I’m enjoying it.”

Rihanna’s maternity fashion is breaking the bias

On a more serious note, what Rihanna has been doing to the mother community is helping to break the bias against pregnant women. Stigma imposed against maternity and weight on women in general has put much pressure on those who are expecting motherhood. Pregnant women and mothers are often perceived as incompetent and uncommitted. If they return to work, people perceive them as cold, but still incompetent, and uncommitted.

But in reality, motherhood is never about your appearance or how much you put on weight. It is about the wonderful wonderful soul you help bring into this world. There is no such thing as sudden incompetency due to the baby you are carrying. And just like Rihanna has been doing all this time, you can still rock the world while being pregnant!
