Rick Owens and Veja Dropped Sustainable Sneakers Collections

Earlier this month, Rick Owens launched sustainable sneakers with the France shoes brand Veja. It is not Owens’ first time working together with Veja. In fact, the launch was the fifth collaboration since they first came together back in September 2019. Since the very first start, their goal has always been creating sustainable sneakers collection. With each collaboration, they innovate and get closer to making shoes that are 100 percent biomaterials.

Rick Owens is most well-known for his grunge aesthetic. Reflecting on his past collaborations with the likes of Birkenstock and Adidas, one can clearly see his “signature” touch on those items. These two newly-launched sneakers with Veja are no exception.

The Hiking Style

Launching date: 4 November 2021

Launched in three colours; Black, Dust and Honey, the construction of the Hiking style uses C.W.L., a vegan and 54 percent bio-based leather alternative, and organic cotton. Its rugged sole is shaped from 100 percent biomaterials. Its outsole is produced from Amazonian rubber and rice waste, with the midsole partly from sugar cane.

The Performance Runner

Launching Date: December 3

Coming up with four different colors; Hunter, Black, Carnelian and Pearl, the Performance Runner collection bears resemblance to Veja’s Marlin collection. They both share an understated upper sitting atop a technical midsole. Each pair of the Performance Runner is made from a recycled polyester knit, and a 65% bio-based outsole.

The Epiphany Behind the Rick Owens X Veja Collaborations

In a 2019 interview with Vogue, Rick Owens recalled his sudden realization on responsible consumerism and sustainability. “The hype element of the sneaker market was starting to worry me a little bit,” he said. “When something blows up like that, it acquires this tone of status and consumption, and I wanted to turn that around a little bit.”

Almost all sneakers are made of plastic, with most of their parts not separable and degradable, which makes them nearly impossible to recycle. Owens, then, realized that “making plastic trophies maybe isn’t the best thing to do” and went for the next logical thing which was sustainable sneakers. And so in 2017, Rick Owens reached out to Veja and started their long journey of sustainability experiments.

Coming up with materials to replace plastic turned out to be quite a challenge. Their first collection was a pair of running shoes made out of 45 percent bio-based materials like banana oil, sugarcane, rice husk, and natural rubber. It can handle routine morning jogs, but the structure is not yet durable for heavy use such as a marathon. Now, the Performance Runner are 65 percent biomaterials. Hopefully, we will be able to witness the invention of the first free-plastic sneakers in the future!

To wrap it up…

Sustainable fashion is the future. At the end of the day, we all share a collective responsibility to be more conscious with our consumption. There is no such thing as too late. Even Rick Owens himself admitted that he might have had his epiphany a little bit too late. However, it does not hinder him from progressing.

Like Owens said, “At this point, I’ve probably poisoned the earth more than I could personally replace, but maybe I can be a voice suggesting there are new, better ways to consume. Beyond the ecological responsibility, it’s about being more thoughtful and more considerate about everything we buy, and that’s an attitude I totally endorse.”

You can contribute to the joint-effort of sustaining our planet right from this second. It is only a matter of choice.
