Moving on from New York Fashion Week earlier in September, Burberry kicked off London Fashion Week SS21 with an unforgettable show that was streamed via gaming platform Twitch.tv. The gist: set in a forest and surrounded by lush pine trees, impeccably-dressed models made their way towards a clearing with rock-esque music playing in the background.
The collection is aptly called ‘In Bloom’. Creative Director Ricardo Tisci explains, “I was thinking about regeneration, about dynamic youth, about nature constantly recreating itself, always growing and evolving, always alive. Water is a symbol of that also – of newness, freshness and cleansing. And through water, life grows – water is what allows nature to bloom. Everything is circular.”
Between the out-of-place music, Secret Service-type bodyguards escorting the models and the odd remark about a “love affair between a mermaid and a shark” in the show notes, it was hard to visualise the bigger picture. Thankfully, the collection made up for that with summer-ready ensembles comprising fisherman’s hats, crystal netting, ocean-blue parkas, tangerine trenches and blazers that put the water perspective into play.
And despite the slight confusion of the show’s context, the overall designs in this collection felt very-much practical and in tune with the artistic essence of London.
“The collection is focused and refined – one vision, one story. This is the essence of both Burberry’s identity and my own creativity. Reaffirming the codes of Burberry – my codes of Burberry, our DNA,” he concludes of his London Fashion Week SS21 collection.
