A Brief History of: Supermodels

In order to become a supermodel one must be on all the covers all over the world at the same time so that people can recognise the girls.

Instantly recognizable face, healthy hair, perfect skin and amazonian proportions- these are the ingredients of a supermodel.

An early use of the term supermodel appeared in 1891, in an interview with artist Henry Marks, in which Marks told journalist Harry How,

A good many models are addicted to drink, and, after sitting a while, will suddenly go to sleep. Then I have had what I call the ‘super’ model.

Although the term “supermodel” in the 19th century originated from a beautiful woman who Today, Campbell, Crawford, Evangelista, Patitz and Turlington are regarded as the “Original Supermodels”.

By the 1990s, the term was used to describe the highest paid and most successful models in the industry.

But soon, the days of movie stardom, fame, and unprecedented wealth went out of fashion.

Some speculated it was due to the models’ poor attitudes and ungraceful aging, but in reality fashion simply had its season and new styles became trendy.

As clothes became less flashy, designers turned to models who were less glamorous, so they wouldn’t overpower the clothing

Today, we see social media supermodels such as Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid enjoying fame and fortune as their predecessors once did.
