Beauty Food: Anti-Inflammatory Oatmeal

When you hear the word “inflammation,” you may immediately think about the swelling or redness that comes from stubbing your toe. Those are definitely two external signs of inflammation, but there’s more to it.

Inflammation occurs naturally as part of the body’s immune response. When your body is fighting an infection or injury, it sends inflammatory cells to the rescue. This results in those classic signs — swelling, redness, and sometimes pain. That’s completely normal and natural.

Eating a healthy, non-processed diet can lead to lower levels of stress-inflammatory responses and also more beautiful skin.

We are told that a lean meal coupled with the right amount of sleep, diet and exercize will lead to a lean body and clear mind.

But what if we still feel awful after eating chicken breast and spinach?

The story changes when inflammation lingers and never fully goes away. This chronic inflammation means your body is always in a state of high alert, and it can trigger some major health issues, including heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and cancer.

Well.. then perhaps it is time to consider switching to one of the healthiest meal alternatives out there: oatmeal.

Here is how to make a delicious bowl of oats, that will satisfy your tastebuds and calm your immune system simultaneously:

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups old-fashioned oats
  • 1 cup oat bran
  • ½ cup nonfat dry milk
  • ½ cup low-fat soy flour
  • ½ cup almond meal
  • ½ cup ground flax seeds
  • ¼ cup sesame seeds

Directions: Combine all of the ingredients, and store in the freezer in an airtight container.

When you’re ready to make the cereal, bring ¾ cup water to a boil in a small saucepan. Stir in ½ cup cereal mix, and turn the heat to low. Simmer for 1 minute. Then cover and remove from the heat. Allow to stand for 3 minutes. Serve immediately, and with fresh berries if desired.

If you don’t have the time to cook it on the stove, you can combine the cereal and water in a deep bowl and microwave for 3 minutes instead.
