The 15 Minutes Oil Cleansing TikTok Beauty Trend proven to be doing more harm to your skin! Be careful!
TikTok Beauty Trend has become a particular niche for beauty bloggers and enthusiasts alike to explore new approaches to make-up and skincare. Most of the time, the beauty community in TikTok has been anything but helpful, from DIY skin tint to 10 seconds contour. Unfortunately, not all of them are working, in fact some are downright scam and there are trends that can cause harm to your skin. Today, we are going over some of them so you could avoid harming yourself in the future.
Anyhow, the rule of thumb for surfing on the internet has always been to not blindly trust anything you see on it.
The trend itself is explanatory. You are to take your favorite cleansing oil and massage it into your skin for 15 to 20 minutes. The way it is supposed to work is by dissolving oil with oil. So, the cleanser oil “should” bring up all the lipids to the surface before you wash it all away. The technique called “gritting” is named as such due to the little plugs of sebum which you’re left with.
However, it turned out this “beauty hack” is causing more harm than good. Deep cleansing your skin using an oil cleanser will also open your pores. Likewise, if you do not know the treatment to close those pores afterwards or is not an expert in skincare, this will leave your skin vulnerable. In the long run, bacteria could enter your pores and the risk is magnified if you have sensitive skin.
Perdita Nouril, Beauty Editor for Women’s Health UK, has reviewed the technique herself. She concluded that it did not do her face skin that much. She did not get any sebum out of her skin, nor did it make her pores look better. So, in the end, she really did not recommend this oil cleansing technique for anyone else. According to her, using cleansing oil for 1-2 minutes is already sufficient for most people. You can read her full verdict here.
